Affirmations and mantras can be an important tool to help children develop positive foundations on which to grow. A positive self-belief system built in childhood will hopefully stay with a person throughout their life. While attending the National Kids Yoga Conference, I got the pleasure of meeting Erin Hurley, an elementary school guidance counselor from Virginia. Erin was also named “School Counselor of the Year” for her school district.
She is the kind of guidance counselor that any of you would love to have your children work with and learn from. Erin has a kind and creative spirit and truly cares about children. Plus she definitely understands the importance of introducing yoga and mindfulness to children so they will have these skills for life.
Erin shared with me how she uses the Kids Yoga Challenge Pose Cards when she works with students in her elementary classrooms. She has loved using these pose cards with her students as they are visual, age-appropriate, and include simple yet memorable mantras.
Each yoga pose card has a corresponding empowering mantras for success such as “I am strong” or “I am fair and equal.” This ensures that the students are not only receiving the health benefits of each pose, but also the mental and mindfulness benefits as well.
Erin shared with me one incredible activity and lesson plan that she did with her students that I wanted to pass along. This lesson could be done anytime throughout the school year, but would tie in nicely with the beginning of the school year, Thanksgiving or a kindness theme.
Mantras and Mindfulness Kids Yoga Lesson Plan
This lesson would work well with children ages 5-11.
First, brainstorm with the students about positive qualities that they see in themselves. For example being kind, honest, hardworking, caring, strong, etc. Write these qualities on the board.
Next, the students took the “hand template” and wrote qualities that described themselves. They did this by writing around the hand template.
Finally, the students were able to put the yoga poses and mantras for success together to practice and perform. This absolutely made the lesson even more memorable as it ties together so many different types of student learning such as visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning.
Have you tried our new kids yoga pose cards? They are getting amazing reviews from parents, teachers, counselors and kids. They love them! We do too and want to share them with you!
We are giving away two decks of 30 The Kids Yoga Challenge Pose Cards!
Looking for something active and fun to do with children this winter?
Children love this Snow Much Fun Kids Yoga Lesson plan. All you need are some names of yoga poses that you want to teach, some plush white balls, and some pose card visuals which make it helpful for children to see and understand what the pose looks like.
Before plying with kids I attach a small sticker or tape to the snowballs with the name of a yoga pose on each one. Fun poses to include that children always enjoy learning and practicing are Star Pose, Warrior 2, Boat Pose, Chair Pose, and Triangle Pose.
Select just 4-6 yoga poses for the children to learn and practice for each themed cold yoga class. It is best to focus on practicing a few yoga poses during a class instead of many yoga poses.
I like to use a present box or holiday gift bag to put the snowballs in. It creates a lot more anticipation when the kids take turns drawing the pose (snowball) out of a box or bag.
After one snowball pose is drawn, all of the children practice that pose before drawing out a new pose.
I model the poses myself or use the Kids Yoga Challenge Pose Cards or the Kids Yoga Challenge App to help demonstrate the pose. After all of the snowballs have been selected, then it is time to play some yoga games to practice the poses.
Kids also love practicing balance with their snowballs. I like to line the children up on one end of the room. Slowly they try to walk and balance their snowball on their outstretched hand, in their elbow, under their chin, or on top of their heads. Ask the children where else they could balance their snowball. They are sure to have ideas.
Children can also use their snowball for a breathing exercise called the Snowball Race. Students line up their snowball at the back of their yoga mat. On your mark, get set and go! They try to use their strong breath to move the snowball to the end of their mat.
At the end of class, have the children slowly melt into their mats, and place their snowball on their bellies. As they breathe deeply, they can notice the rise and fall of their breath with the snowball.
I love visiting schools and enjoy talking to the students about being an author and introducing them to yoga. Recently I spent a wonderful morning at the Paton-Churdan Elementary and Junior High Schools speaking to the students about writing and publishing books.
We also learned some fun yoga poses and practiced them with games. A favorite game was the Mannequin Challenge. At the time this challenge had taken over the internet and the students were so excited to be a part of this sensation.
You can view our entertaining Mannequin Challenge below. The kids were very excited about this and I was amazed at their determination and focus to stay as still as they can. Being still isn’t easy when you are packed in tightly next to your classmates, but when you include some balance poses as well, it is even more challenging! The junior high kids are first in the video, followed by the preschool and elementary.
The school kids definitely rocked this yoga mannequin challenge! The preschool and elementary tried their best. It’s hard to be still! No matter what, everyone had fun!
