Go Go Yoga for Kids Turns 1!

One year ago on an a hot August afternoon, I clearly remember sitting in a coffee shop while waiting to pick up one of my kids from soccer practice.

Just the day before I had submitted Go Go Yoga for Kids: A Complete Guide to Using Yoga with Kids for publication on Amazon. For the first time in over a year I felt a sense of a loss. After months and months of being in the trenches with the time consuming writing and publishing process, my book would soon become available in “.”2-3 business days

With the weekend looming ahead I knew it would be mid next week until I saw my book truly available. At that moment I had nothing pressing to do. It was an odd feeling.

Killing a little time in that coffee shop that day, I typed in my book title into the Amazon search box. There before my eyes, I saw my book cover slowly  appear. Go Go Yoga for Kids was published and live!

The feeling of “what to do next” was quickly replaced with elation and then alarm.  I couldn’t wait to share this book that I had cultivated over for years.  I truly wanted to help and inspire others to use yoga with kids, but would anybody care?

You did. Thank you.  Go Go Yoga for Kids reached Best Seller status within a month and has maintained it for the past year. With almost 100 5 star reviews,  it humbles me that I have been able to help adults and children see the benefits and fun of yoga.

I couldn’t have done any of this without these 3 kids. They help with everything. They are my guinea pigs for all ideas, as well as labeling, boxing, shipping,  modeling, taking pictures, videos, proofing, listening, coming to events, and cheering me on. I couldn’t do it without them.

They even threw a surprise birthday party for Go Go Yoga for Kids. Complete with the presents, cake, and the puppy. Love them.

This book has led to an amazing year filled with learning and growth with The Kids Yoga Challenge Pose Cards, Kids Yoga Teacher Training,  and so much more. What is next? Your needs, ideas, and stories inspire me. What would you like to see?

Let me know here. Thank you for being a part of it.

How to Use Yoga in the School Classroom

The wonderful preschool age is one of my favorites stages for kids. This age group is imaginative, creative, and always up for trying something new. When I was asked to speak and exhibit at the Iowa Early Childhood Conference about Using Yoga in the Preschool Classroom, of course I had to say yes. I have so much to share about how to use yoga with kids at home or school.

These preschool early childhood teachers and directors were ready to learn about how to incorporate yoga into their classroom with yoga poses, games, breathing exercises, lesson plans, and much more.

I love teaching how ordinary props and materials can be used to engage children and get them excited about yoga.

See our recommended kids yoga resources or enroll in our online course Kids Yoga 101: How to Teach Yoga to Kids for hundreds of more ideas on using yoga with kids.

How to Use a Breathing Ball or Hoberman Sphere With Kids

One of my new  favorite items to use in teaching kids yoga is the Breathing Ball or Hoberman Sphere .  It provides a great visual  for teaching kids to slow down their breath, and take long and even inhales and exhales.  We also talk about how the Breathing Ball is similar to the the work our lungs or diaphragm does.

How to Use a Breathing Ball with Children:

  • As a teacher or leader, model using it together as a whole group. As you stretch the ball out, take a deep long breath, together as a group. Then as you squeeze the ball together, let out a long deep exhale. You can experiment with the pace and show what happens when we breathe in and out too quickly. Talk about the difference in how your body feels when you take short quick breaths compared to long deep breaths.
  • If it is a smaller group, pass the ball around the circle and let each child take turns opening and closing it in time with their breath.
  • The ball is also fun to toss around the circle as it opens and shuts. Have the children participate in a team building and cooperation exercise to see how many times they can catch the ball with out it dropping. This is also a good exercise in building mindfulness.

Happy Father’s Day: Try Something New Together

Change Your Perspective: Try an Inversion

Want to try something different with your dad this Father’s Day? Try an inversion together. Do not worry, there are many types of inversions and all have health benefits.

Inversions to Try:

  • Legs up the Wall
  • Shoulder Stand
  • Crow Pose
  • Side Crow
  • Tripod
  • Headstand
  • Handstand

Benefits of Inversions:

1. Boosts Your Brain: When your body is upside down and your feet are higher than your heart, the normal pull of gravity on your body is revered, which helps blood return to the heart.

2. Makes you Happy: Endorphins are released and your frown will literally be turned upside down.

3. Helps Digestion: Inversions release trapped gas and keeps things moving along.

4. Strengthen Your Body: Your muscles are turned on and your core engaged so this creates strength and balance throughout your body

5. They are fun! Be like a kid again! Kids are usually pretty good about trying anything and getting right back up again if they fall.

Remember that some inversions do require great strength and balance, so take things slow. You will get the same benefits from  Down Dog or Legs up the wall  as you will from a headstand, so there is no need to rush your body.

Read our 6 tips on getting into a headstand here.

Bonus tip: There is nothing wrong with using a wall. Same benefits are achieved.

Partner Yoga for Kids Class

What a blast it was to be back at Athleta for another fun kids yoga class. This time leading a Partner Yoga for Kids class. We warmed up our bodies with exercises to get our hearts pumping. Then got ready for our partner and group poses.

We got into out Partner Poses using our Kids Yoga Challenge Pose Cards.

The yoga cards were perfect as we worked on mastering the 4 challenge levels with the included partner poses.

We continued with some fun team building group yoga poses with our Down Dog Tunnel. The kids loved it and did great!

We closed class with a Stillness and Savasana and with a few deep cleansing breaths. If you are looking to try out some more partner poses, get our Kids Yoga Partner Pose lesson plan or see our tips on partner poses here.

Yoga and Art Therapy in the School

What a blessing it has been to lead kids yoga classes this summer with the Children and Family Urban Movement.  CFUM’s mission is to create a community that supports the potential of children, youth and families through educational success, healthy living, and community engagement.

Introducing the kids to yoga and mindfulness has filled my heart. They had so much joy in trying new things.

As a special treat, each child was able to personalize their very own donated yoga mat.
