Happy May Day from Go Go Yoga for Kids

I have such fond memories as a kid with creating May Day baskets with my sisters on the first of this month, filling the basket with little treats, and delivering them to neighbors. It was so much fun to get back from our deliveries and discover May Day baskets left by neighbors on our front step. It was a sure sign that the other neighborhood kids were celebrating the start of May as well.

Years later, I kept this tradition going with my own children. Although we live in a bigger city, we try to make our own little community by knowing our neighbors and surprising them with this somewhat forgotten tradition.

May is a beautiful month filled with new growth and life. Celebrate Spring with this Spring Yoga Transformation lesson plan or download your Spring Coloring Mandala.

How Yoga Taught Me One Valuable Lesson I Will Never Forget

How Yoga Taught Me One Valuable Lesson I Will Never Forget

I vividly remember my first yoga class. I was in my early thirties and the midst of teaching kindergarten, earning my master’s degree, parenting three young children, and training hard for triathlons and marathons in the early morning mornings so I could fit it in. There wasn’t any “off season” or down time. I just kept doing what I knew…

Grab a Buddy for these Fun Kids Yoga Partner Poses and Guide

Kids love yoga partner poses! They are fun to do and they build trust and community with one another and the group. These partner poses can be done at home, school, camp, yoga class or anywhere you have kids ready to try something new and have fun.

I try to incorporate partner or group poses in every kids yoga class as it gives everyone a common goal to work toward and builds confidence when mastered.

When I created the Kids Yoga Challenge Pose Cards, I purposely incorporated partner poses for some of the challenge poses. The partner poses are built on progression so gives the children a goal to work toward and it so much fun to achieve together!

Tips on working with partners for a kids yoga class

  • Try to have kids partner up with those of similar size.  All partner poses can be modified, but it is a good idea to start this way.
  • Have the partners get to know one another before practicing the poses. Take a moment for them to introduce themselves to one another and pose a few questions that they need to answer as something they are good at or a favorite game to play.
  • Have one pair of partners demonstrate the Partner Pose before everyone tries it. As the partner pair is demonstrating, this is a good time to talk about proper form and any safety concerns. Although yoga partner poses are safe and fun, it is still a good idea to remind kids to take it slow. They will naturally be excited to get right into the pose so this will help them remember.
  • After the partners have practiced the featured yoga pose for 1-2 minutes. Have one group demonstrate the pose one last time. Kids love to show off the poses with their partners.

Being a Writer School Presentation and Kids Yoga

I was invited to present at Jordan Creek elementary school about Being a Writer and share the process I went through with publishing Go Go Yoga for Kids. The third grade students were wonderful listeners and asked some insightful questions. Of course we did a few yoga poses and games as well!

Iowa Association of School Librarians Meets Go Go Yoga for Kids
